Banta to Host Illegible License Plate Replacement Event

March 16, 2026

HARRISBURG – Rep. Jake Banta (R-Erie) is hosting an Illegible License Plate Replacement Event on Tuesday, April 7, from 4-6 p.m. at A.F. Dobler Hose and Ladder Company, 37 Walnut St. in Girard.

“If your license plate is difficult to read, you could find yourself paying a fine,” said Banta. “Get the plate replaced for free at my upcoming event. We will have everything in place to get this taken care of as quickly and easily as possible.”

A license plate is deemed illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet or if the registration plate shows any fading, blistering, peeling, discoloration or loss of reflectivity.

“Some PA license plates are peeling due to a combination of manufacturing changes and materials used, resulting in corrosion and paint failure,” said Banta. “The state changed its manufacturing process to coat the entire license plate with sealant before stamping, leaving exposed aluminum on the edges where corrosion can begin. If your plate is peeling or corroded to the point of not being able to properly read the plate, this event is a convenient opportunity to have it changed out for free.”

Personnel will be on hand to fill out the necessary paperwork. Motorists are asked to bring their vehicle with the affected plate attached, along with their unexpired PA driver’s license and current vehicle registration card. New plates will be mailed directly to vehicle owners.
